Tri-Var

There is an annual sports competition between the 4 major Universities in this part of South Africa, called Tri-Varsity- aka Tri-Var. Tri-Var is a weekend long even where all the schools get together at a predetermined location and face each other in a variety of sporting events. Students from all of the universities wear different colored overalls (what we consider painters suites) to these events- decorating them as they see fit. Not wanting to miss out on the fun, I purchased and (poorly) decorated my originally white overalls with purple pain and rainbow sharpies. Some people get really into Tri-Var and wear their overalls the entire week before hand around campus and in town, others save their until Friday/Saturday/Sunday festivities either at the events or in Grahamstown. The real excitement over Tri-Var is the drinking. No Rhodes student can deny that the only reason that it is such a big deal is because it gives everyone an excuse to drink. During that weekend all of the bars and clubs in Grahamstown are packed and the entire campus is dressed in their overalls or some form of purple. It was a tone of fun running around and celebrating with my fellow Rhodents, and seeing all of Grahamstown embrace the craziness that is Tri-Varsity.
